Chapter 4: Five Hundred Yards
The Army investigator came to Gran's kitchen at nine on Sunday morning, and she brought a recorder, a legal pad and a thermos of her own coffee.
I noticed that and said nothing.
She sat down across from me and set the recorder between us.
"Special Agent, Criminal Investigation Division," she said. "I'll need your whole day yesterday, from when you woke up."
Kirk came in through the screen door ten minutes after she started.
He was in a plain gray sweater and jeans, and he held the evidence bag in both hands.
"Ma'am," he said to Gran.
"You're late," Gran said, and put a plate of eggs in front of him.
He ate standing at the counter.
I told the agent everything.
She asked who had been standing nearest when Mom took Livia's side.
I said it was my father in his old jacket, nodding, and my voice caught for the first time.
The agent turned the recorder off for one minute.
Nobody spoke until she turned it on.
"The cup has the colonel's thumbprint on the lid," she said, and tapped the bag. "That's going to the lab in Atlanta. The sedative will match or it won't."
"It will," I said.
"Then I need you to sign this," she said, "saying you consent to a full toxicology draw and that the account is true."
She slid the page across the table.
The pen was in my hand, and my hand did not work.
I looked at the line and could not make it go down.
A big warm palm closed around my wrist.
Kirk had crossed the kitchen without a sound.
