Chapter 21: The Rite
The Hall of Ten Thousand Lamps had no lamps lit.
Light came from the ceiling instead, a pale gold, falling in long straight lines like rain that did not wet anything.
Every line ended in a person.
Three hundred courtiers stood in rows, with a thread of gold running down into the top of each head and a second one running out of each chest toward the dais.
The second ones were what Zhiyao could not stop looking at.
She could see them.
She had never been able to before.
The threads had grown so thick that anybody could see them, hundreds of bright cords stretched across the floor, all of them going to the same place.
On the dais stood Xueling in a robe of white and gold, with her wrists held out in front of her.
Her face was dry and blank.
The usher stood on her left side, faceless and tall.
Wuyan stood on her right.
His eyes were pale glass.
Zhiyao stepped through the door.
Nobody turned.
The usher's head did not move.
She walked down the center aisle, and the threads parted around her and slid past her shoulders without touching.
