Chapter 20: Lantern Night

"Then in my cuffs," Shouzhi said. "And with the slip in your hand."

"Of course."

"It's the only way it can be done. It's the Doors' law."

"It's your law," said Qinghe.

He smiled up at Shouzhi from the couch, with the chain still around his wrist.

They walked to the Prefecture through the lantern crowds, an hour before the gong.

Ten thousand paper lights hung from every eave in Shuangjiang, red and gold and white.

The whole city was moving up the hill toward the courtyard.

Nobody looked twice at a tall man in a torn black coat, or at a shorter one in indigo and ochre.

They took the back passage by the old gate.

It was narrow and dark, between two walls, with the drums of the festival thudding on the other side.

Shouzhi stopped halfway.

"Shouzhi?"

"One minute."

"We've got an Assize."

"I know. I need one minute. Come here."

Qinghe came.

Shouzhi locked the iron on his wrists, the real cuffs, over the old red marks, and the click was as loud as a temple bell.

Qinghe went very still.

Shouzhi put one hand flat on the wall beside his head, and with the other he opened Qinghe's trousers.

"Now?" Qinghe whispered. "Here?"

"Be quiet. You're in my keeping."

Qinghe's cock was already hard in Shouzhi's fist, hot and silky.

Shouzhi stroked him once, root to tip, and Qinghe made a small helpless noise and dropped his cuffed hands against Shouzhi's chest.
