Chapter 5: Not for Sale
The silence stretches.
Nobody at the table looks away from Damien.
He doesn't speak.
He's waiting, I realize. Not out of cowardice. He's waiting to see what I'll do.
I put my napkin on the table.
"You asked a question," I say to the man with the flushed cheeks. "I'll answer it."
He raises his eyebrows.
"Yes. He bought my family's debt. That's true. It's in the papers by now."
A woman's fork clinks against her plate.
"What he didn't buy is me."
"Mrs. Kastar," the silver mustache says.
"Last night, a man came into my ER with no pulse. I got it back." I keep my voice level. "This morning your chairman put a contract in front of me, and I read all forty-one pages. I negotiated three terms. He agreed to two."
Damien's eyes cut to me.
"Which of you has ever read a contract before you signed it?"
Nobody answers.
"That's what I thought."
The flushed man opens his mouth.
"You called me a purchase over soup," I say. "I've been called worse by patients who were bleeding on my shoes. They were frightened. What's your excuse?"
His face goes the color of the wine.
I stand.
My chair scrapes back across the stone.
"Enjoy your dinner."
I walk out.
Nobody stops me.
The hall is long and dim, and my heels are loud on the floor.
