Chapter 16: The Co-op

The Grange hall smelled of floor wax and folding chairs.

By six on Monday evening I had put sixty of those chairs in rows.

I'd made a name tag for every rancher on the creek and a plate of food for every name tag.

It was lentil soup, flatbread and a huge tray of my grandmother's kibbeh, because Chicago had taught me that people sign anything while chewing.

Jace stood beside the coffee urn with his arms folded and no idea what to do with his hands.

"What's my job?" he said.

"Look handsome and don't talk."

"I can do half of that."

"You can do the half that works."

The doors opened at six thirty.

They came in by families, boots wiped, hats in hand, and found their tags.

The woman with the silver braids took her seat in the front row and squeezed my arm.

Chet sat beside her, in the bolo tie and a white shirt I'd never seen, with his hearing aid in.

I walked to the front of the room and tapped the microphone.

"Good evening," I said. "I'm Nadia Haddad. I own half of Ransom Fork, and I don't know a thing about water."

A few people chuckled.

"But I've run a lot of rooms. So here's the agenda."

I held up one sheet of paper.

"One page. Eleven families. Every one of you holds a share in the 1911 decree. Tonight you vote on whether you'll hold it together or let anyone buy it off you one at a time."
