Chapter 18: The Green Dress

"Not that one," Chet said. "It looks like a tablecloth."

We were in the back of the only dress shop in Elk Bend, a narrow store with a bell on the door and a woman behind the counter who had hugged me twice already.

Chet sat in a velvet chair by the fitting room with his cane across his knees, supervising.

He had insisted on coming.

He had insisted on a green dress too, though he'd refused to say why.

"I like this one," I said, holding up a cream thing with a lace collar.

"You look like a church lady."

"It's a nice church."

"Green, girl. The boy said green."

"The boy didn't say why."

"Because Lottie wore green to every important day of her life," Chet said. "The day I met her. The day she bought the place. The day she put me in my place."

I stopped.

"I never saw her in green."

"You only saw her three times, honey."

He was right.

I put the cream dress back.

The shop owner came out of the back room carrying a garment bag.

"I ordered this in your size after the sale," she said. "I figured you'd want a real one."

Size 20.

She said it plainly.

She'd been measuring me by eye for a month.

She unzipped the bag.

The dress was deep forest green, long-sleeved, with a V neckline and a skirt that fell to the knee.
