Chapter 19: Mama Haddad
My mother came off the plane in Billings wearing a fur-trimmed coat, enormous sunglasses and three scarves.
She was sixty-one, five foot three, and she walked through the terminal.
She dropped her bag, took off the sunglasses, and looked at the man standing beside me.
"This is the cowboy," she said.
"Mama, this is Jace."
"Six foot four," she said. "My God. You can't buy pants for him."
"Ma'am," Jace said, and took off his hat.
She looked at his hat.
She looked at his hands, at the rope scars, and at the ring on mine.
"Hold out your arm," she said.
He held it out.
She took his wrist in both hands, felt it, and let go.
"Strong," she said. "Does he talk?"
"Not much."
"Good. Your father talked too much. Where is the car?"
In the truck, she sat in the middle and kept one hand on my knee all the way to Elk Bend.
She asked Jace nineteen questions about the ranch, none about his money.
She didn't say another word about him until we pulled into the yard.
