Chapter 8: The Feed Store
Everyone in Elk Bend was at the feed store that morning, or it felt that way.
The building had a tin roof and a porch crowded with men in hats, and a dozen pickups nosed up to the curb.
Jace parked, came around, and opened my door.
Then he took my hand.
He didn't do it quietly.
He laced his fingers through mine in front of the entire porch and walked me up the steps.
Every head turned.
The talking stopped.
I felt about seven different kinds of heat in my face.
"Jace," I whispered, "they're all staring."
"Let them."
"You don't have to."
"I know I don't."
He nodded to the men on the porch.
"Morning, boys. This is Nadia Haddad. She owns half of Ransom Fork."
A gray-haired man in a feed cap said, "Ma'am." The others followed, a ripple of hat tips.
I felt a little less like prey.
Inside, the store smelled like grain and rubber and leather.
Jace pulled a cart out of the line, and I went down the aisles with a list in my hand.
Salt blocks.
Fence staples.
A box of work gloves.
A woman at the end of the aisle was holding a bag of mineral supplement.
She was fifty-something, with silver braids and a denim jacket.
She walked straight up to me and wrapped me in a hug.
I froze, then hugged her back.
"Lottie came in here every Thursday for thirty years," she said into my shoulder. "She bought a bag of chicken feed and told us all how her niece in Chicago ran a hundred weddings a year."
"I didn't know she talked about me."
