Chapter 9: Weaning Day

By six on Saturday morning there were nineteen trucks in the yard and I had a problem.

Thirty neighbors had come to help Jace wean the calves, and nobody had told me they would need breakfast.

I stood on the porch in a borrowed apron and counted heads.

Then I did what I'd done for ten years of weddings.

I pulled two sawhorses out of the barn, laid a door across them, and covered it with Lottie's best white tablecloth.

I set out a coffee urn and a stack of cups, forty biscuits split and buttered, and two pans of scrambled eggs.

I wrote names on masking tape and stuck one on every shirt as they came up for plates.

"It's a weaning," a rancher said, "not a gala."

"It's a gala with cattle," I said, and handed him a biscuit.

He laughed and let me tape his name on.

By seven the whole yard was fed.

By eight, three men had asked if I was available for their daughters' weddings.

Jace watched me from across the corral with a coffee cup in his hand, and every time I looked up his eyes were on me.

I started putting the pitcher down just so I could look back.

Chet sat in a lawn chair at the edge of the yard with his hearing aid turned all the way up and a plate on his lap.

"Look at you," he said, when I brought him a refill. "You run this like a general."

"I run a nice general."
