Chapter 9: The Witness
The Council's witness was a small gray clerk, and he never took his pen off the page.
He wrote down what we ate, where we sat, and which door each of us used.
At dinner he wrote down that I wore the green dress and that the prince held my chair.
"Is all this necessary?" Lucan said.
"The Accord requires an impartial record of the prince's conduct, my lord."
"And Lady Rosalind?"
"The bride in waiting is entitled to be present at any private stay."
Rosalind sat across from me in pale blue, as straight as a poker, and did not look at me once.
I noticed her hands.
They shook a little when she lifted her glass.
I put it away to think about later.
The caretaker had laid out cold ham, bread, and a bowl of last year's apples.
"Is that all there is?" Rosalind said.
"The pantry is bare, my lady. The Chancellor sent no supplies."
"Naturally," Lucan said.
I wiped my mouth on my napkin.
"There's flour in the pantry," I said. "And butter, and the apples. And I saw a jar of honey."
