Chapter 24: Say My Name
The envoy rode out at dawn with the Prince in a covered cart, and nobody on the wall watched him go.
That night, Do-gyeom filled the big wooden tub himself.
Bong-sun had hauled the water up in buckets and left a block of soap that smelled of pine.
She had also left a stack of towels and a look at them both that said she had opinions.
The tub stood in front of the hearth in the room above the north gate.
Steam hung over it, golden in the firelight.
"Sit," said Ha-rin.
"You sit. It's your night."
"I said sit."
He sat.
He lowered his big body into the water, with his scarred arm stretched along the rim, and the water rose to his chest.
She undressed slowly in front of the fire.
She knew he was watching, and she took her time with the buttons, the sash, the soft cotton of the shirt.
When she stepped into the tub, he held out his hand, and she took it.
She sank into the heat with a long sigh.
"Come here," he said.
"Why?"
"Turn around. Let me do your hair."
She hesitated, and then she turned and sat between his knees, with her back against his chest and her cropped hair floating on the water.
It had grown since the gorge.
It brushed her chin now, not her jaw.
He took the soap, and worked it into a lather between his palms, and began to wash her hair.
His big fingers were careful.
They went through every strand, and rubbed in slow circles at her scalp.
She felt the tension of six weeks and six years go out of her neck.
