Chapter 7: Bong-sun
"Shoulders back," said Do-gyeom. "You're hunching."
"I'm not hunching."
"You're hunching like a clerk."
"I was married to a clerk."
It was the lie she told best by now.
They stood on the north wall at dawn, with a recurve bow in her hands and a straw target forty paces away on the cliff.
The wind blew her cropped hair across her eyes.
Do-gyeom stood behind her.
He settled his big hands over hers on the grip and the string, and his chest pressed warm against her back.
"Draw to your cheek," he said into her ear. "Breathe out. Let go on the empty."
Her pulse was hammering.
It had nothing to do with the target.
"If you keep standing that close," said Ha-rin, "I'll shoot Gwang-ho."
"Gwang-ho is on the south wall."
"Then I'll shoot his cat."
"Gwang-ho doesn't have a cat."
"I'll get him one first."
She felt him laugh against her back.
She let go of the string, and the arrow flew wide and buried itself in the cliff face a hand's breadth from the straw.
"Better," said Do-gyeom.
