Chapter 11: The Watcher

All day I turned over what Joren had said about the braid.

Whoever wore it was owed a life, and the woman who tied it on him had paid for it.

I had no memory of tying anything, and I did not know what I had paid.

That night he did not take the chair.

He locked the door of his chamber, set the key on the table, and looked at me across the room.

I was sitting on the edge of his bed in one of his shirts, with my hair drying and my feet bare on the stone.

"You said I was to sleep where you could see me," I said.

"I did."

"This is the only place in the hold that's true. You watch me sleep. You've watched me every night."

"I've done what the terms said."

"Then keep to them, Alpha."

His mouth moved.

He came across the room slowly, giving me time to change my mind.

I did not.

I put a foot against his thigh and pushed him down into the chair he had slept in, and he let me.

"My turn," I said.

His eyes went dark.

I settled over his lap with my knees on either side of him, and the shirt rode up my thighs.

His hands went to my hips and stopped there, and I could feel how hard he was through his trousers.

"You've been in charge of me since the field," I said. "I've been dead nine times, and every time you decided how it ended."

"Sabine."

"Not tonight."

I kissed him.

I was in no hurry.

I took his lower lip between my teeth and drew it out, and he made a sound that went through me.
