Chapter 9: Warm Water
The bathtub in Griffin's house stood in front of a wall of glass, deep enough to swim in and long enough for two.
He ran the water hot and poured something into it that smelled like cedar.
I stood in the doorway in his bathrobe, still shaking from the Gathering.
"Take it off," I said.
"The robe?"
"Everything.
"Then get in."
He undressed in the steam, slowly, because I was watching.
He sank into the water with a long groan, and the whole tub rose and sloshed.
He lay back against the end with his arms along the rim, wet and gold-eyed.
I let the robe fall.
I stood naked in the lamplight, my hips and thighs and breasts and belly all there to be seen, and I did not cover anything.
I wanted him to look.
He looked.
His chest hitched.
"Etta," he said, almost soundless.
"Come here."
I stepped into the water and it closed warm over my calves and my thighs.
He took my hand to steady me, and I let him, because I wanted to.
I sat in front of him between his knees with my back to his chest.
His arms came around me, and I let my head fall back on his shoulder.
For a long time he only held me.
First he washed my hair.
He poured warm water over my head from a copper cup.
He worked the soap into my black bob with his big careful fingers, and I nearly purred.
Then he took a washcloth from the edge of the tub and soaped it and began to wash me.
He did my shoulders first, slowly, then my arms, my breasts.
He dragged the soft cloth across each nipple, and I whimpered.
He lifted each of my arms in turn and washed the soft undersides, and kissed my wet shoulder.
