Chapter 14: June
I put myself between the guards and my mother, and I held up my cut hand.
It was still bleeding, and the scar in the middle of it was glowing.
"Take one more step," I said.
The nearest guard looked at my palm and took half a step back.
That was all the time Zeus needed.
"She stays at the Xenia," he said, from the sand.
"Under my roof, with my seal on the door.
Your guards can stand outside it, wife.
They will not set foot over the sill."
Hera looked at him for a long moment.
"Agreed," she said.
She said it too easily, and I noticed.
Two guards carried Alekos off the sand on a shield.
Hermes ran alongside it, white as paper, holding his hand.
They put my mother in a chair, and I walked beside her the whole way home.
When the door of the Xenia closed, neither of us spoke.
Then June sat on the edge of my bed, in a gown of mist, and looked at her own hands.
"They're so big," she said.
"What are?"
"Mine.
I remember them smaller."
"You were twenty-eight," I said.
"That was a long time ago."
