Chapter 20: The Night Before
The infirmary was dark when I went back, and the windows stood open to a sky full of stars.
My mother was asleep at the Xenia with Hermes on a chair beside her.
I had checked twice.
Alekos was sitting up on the cot with his shirt off and his left arm wrapped to the shoulder.
Gold had soaked through the cloth in long bright lines.
He looked up when I came in, and he didn't say anything.
"I'm going to say this once," I said.
"Then I'm going to stop talking."
"All right."
"I forgive you."
He went completely still.
"I forgive the man," I said.
"I saw him walk into black water for my mother and not make a sound.
I'm not forgiving the silence.
Those are two different things, and I'm keeping both."
"That's fair," he said, and his voice broke on it.
"It's more than fair."
"Good.
Now be quiet."
I crossed the room and put my hand on his chest.
His heart was hammering under my palm.
"You're hurt," I said.
"I'm not that hurt."
"You're a liar."
"I'm not that hurt," he said again, slower, "if you're what's being offered."
