Chapter 14: Eat First

Marisol's POV

I had driven two hours with the window down so I would not cry, and I had practiced what I would say.

I forgot every word of it when I saw him on my parents' porch.

Wyatt sat on the top step with a plate in his lap and blood dried at the corner of his mouth.

Joaquin stood in the yard with his arms folded, and he did not look sorry.

"I hit him once," my brother said. "He didn't duck."

"Go inside, Joaquin."

"Mari."

"Please."

He went, and the screen door banged behind him.

Wyatt put the plate down on the boards and stood.

He had not slept since the supper, and it showed in his eyes.

"I'm not here to ask you for anything," he said.

"Good. Then you can listen."

I stopped at the bottom of the steps, so that I had to look up at him.

"You drove the papers," I said. "You sat in the front seat of her car while she planned me."

"Yes."

"For five years I walked past your cellar door in beige. I stood in your yard at harvest and told you how kind Lillian was, and you looked at the ground."

"Yes."

"I thought you were shy."

His face moved, just once.

"You watched me thank her for the handkerchiefs," I said. "You watched me eat her vitamins at the anniversary table, with you at the foot of it, pouring the wine. And you never told me. Not a hint. Not a cough."

"No."

"Say something!"

My voice cracked across the yard, and a hen scattered out from under the porch.
