Chapter 12: What the Sun Lord Sealed

My father came into the great hall with the road still on his boots.

He was a tall man with a gold beard gone white at the edges, and I had never seen him walk so fast.

The court parted in front of him.

He didn't look at the thawed river or the green on the windowsills.

He looked at me, then at Phlegon, then at his three sons standing in a row on the stone floor.

"Who moved my daughter's wedding?" he said.

Nobody answered.

"Who took her gown?"

"Father," Aethon began.

"Who gave the Sunset Cloud Sea to another girl and shut my child out of the hall?"

His voice never rose.

That was the terrible part.

I had heard him shout at storms, and this was worse.

"We believed the letter," Eous said. "Myrrha brought us your letter."

"I wrote one letter," the Sun Lord said. "It named Helia, in my own hand, in front of Phlegon's father's ghost and two of the old gods. I wrote it three years ago and signed it in sun-gold. Show me yours."

Aethon pulled the scroll from his sleeve with a shaking hand.

My father read it once.

He held it to the light, and the gold writing on it went grey, flaked and fell off the page.

"This is not my hand," he said. "Whose is it?"
