Chapter 18: What They Mocked
Aethon came down the tiers one step at a time.
He stopped at the foot of the dais.
He did not look at me.
He looked at Phlegon, and he said it so everyone could hear.
"I called you a cripple in my father's house.
I called you a broken god with a wasted core.
I said my sister would freeze to death in your bed."
"You did," Phlegon said.
"I threw her out of her own hall for you."
"You did that too."
Aethon's jaw worked.
"I want it said in front of the Council. I was told Helia was fragile and I believed it. I was told you were ruined by a war and I believed that. I never asked who told me."
"I did," my father said.
The hall went very quiet.
He rose from the high seat and came down the steps, slow, with his hand on the rail.
"Hear the rest of it," the Sun Lord said. "All of you, so it is said once and in the open."
He turned to face the tiers.
"You have heard the Fire God's gift whispered in this hall for a week," the Sun Lord said. "I will not tell it again. I will tell you what I did with it."
I felt Phlegon's hand tighten on mine.
A sound went through the gods.
He turned to Aethon.
"I took the gift and paid it with silence. And I let you think it was war."
His voice shook.
"I had sealed the day out of her mind, and I could not seal it out of the house."
"I thought saying nothing would be kinder. It was cowardice, and I will answer for it."
Aethon had gone the color of ash.
"Father."
"Every time you spat at that man, you spat at the reason she is alive."
