Chapter 23: Her Own Name

The board of County General met in a room with a long oak table and a pitcher of water nobody touched.

Five people sat on the far side of it.

At the near end, on a chair apart from them, sat the woman from patient affairs, in the same gray skirt and the same reading glasses.

She did not look at me when I came in.

"Ms. MacDuff," said the man in the middle. "You understand why we asked you here."

"Yes."

"A record at this hospital was falsified. Two infants were listed as deceased who were not."

"I know," I said. "I wrote it."

"You're not on our staff."

"I didn't need to be. I stood in a hospital room with an IV in my arm and told a woman exactly which words to type."

I put two sheets of paper on the table.

One was a statement I had written in the car, signed with my own name.

The other was the discharge slip from the night of the fire, with my own handwriting at the bottom.

"She refused," I said. "She said it was a crime, and cruel. She said it twice. Then she read my phone."

"We've read the same phone," said a woman with silver hair.

"Then you know what it said."

Nobody spoke.

"She's worked here nineteen years," I said. "She didn't lie for money. I'm the one who owes this building a correction, and I'm making it in front of you, with my name."

The man in the middle looked at the others.

The officer took off her glasses and set them on her knee.
