Chapter 5: What the Nurse Heard
She came up the lake road at first light, in a small blue car with a cracked taillight.
She was still wearing her scrubs under a coat.
Roz opened the door with the frying pan in her hand.
"Put that down," the nurse said. "I'm not one of them."
"Prove it."
"I'm the one who changed your dressing at four in the morning, and you called me a coward for stapling it too tight."
Roz lowered the pan.
"You stapled it too tight."
"I know. I'm sorry. Can I come in?"
She sat at the table with her coat on and both hands around the mug I gave her.
She did not drink from it.
"I've worked the maternity floor for nine years," she said. "I have a baby of my own at home. She's eleven months. I'm telling you that so you know why I'm here."
"Tell us what you heard," I said.
"Your surgeon went into the operating room with you. I took the second patient in recovery." She nodded at Roz. "After the surgery, both of you were out, and I was told to clear the bay."
"By who?" Roz said.
"The man at the desk. The driver."
I knew that man's good coat.
"I went out," she said. "I stood at the end of the hall to log the vitals. And I heard crying."
Neither of us moved.
"Two babies," she said. "Two of them, from your bay and from the one beside it. Small and thin, but loud. The kind of loud you hear when the lungs are working."
I heard myself say, "The surgeon told me she didn't make it."
"I know what the surgeon told you."
