Chapter 17: The Leatherworker

The leatherworker was a broad, gruff woman in a stained apron, and she delivered the package to the farmhouse door herself.

She handed it to Kaede with a face.

"For the sword belt," she said.

Then she walked off without another word.

Kaede carried the bundle inside, set it on the table and unwrapped the oilcloth.

Her ears went red first, then her neck, then the rest of her.

Inside lay a harness of soft black leather, with brass buckles, two wide straps for the hips and a smooth ring at the center.

Beside it lay a curved, polished shape carved from dark wood and oiled until it shone.

"Rin," Kaede said weakly.

"Mm?"

"What is this?"

"A commission."

"You asked a stranger to make a, to make this?"

"I drew her a diagram on the back of a ledger page."

"She asked three questions about the width of your hips."

"I answered them like a professional."

Kaede put both hands over her face.

Her shoulders shook.

For a second Rin thought she was upset, and then the laugh came out, a huge helpless whoop.

"She said it was for the sword belt!"

"She was being polite."

"The whole valley is going to know."

"The whole valley has known since the bath house. Ume told me the council voted on it."

Kaede wheezed.

She wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand, picked up the harness and turned it over in her fingers.

The laughter slowly faded out of her face.

It was replaced by something quiet and hot.

"You want me to wear this."

"I want you to put it on, and I want you to take me with it. I want to go first."

"First."

"I'm the one with the pen," Rin said. "I'm sure of what I want. Put it on, General."

Kaede stripped in front of the table, slowly.

She stepped into the harness and pulled the straps up her strong thighs and settled the ring against her.

She fastened the buckles.

The wooden shaft stood out in front of her, dark and smooth.

She looked down at it, and then at Rin, and a flush went right across her chest.

"I feel ridiculous," she said.

"You look incredible."

"Rin."

"Come here."

Rin had already undressed.

She knelt up on the bed on her hands and knees, with her braid over one shoulder and her hips high.

She looked back over her shoulder at Kaede.

Kaede's breath left her.

"Oh," she said. "Oh, fuck."

"Oil's on the table. The little blue pot."

Kaede found it with unsteady fingers.
