Chapter 15: From the First Second
"Nine moves," Si-hyeon said.
Gwi-han dropped from the north wall into the courtyard, landing lightly, and the persimmon in his hand never wobbled.
He didn't answer.
Si-hyeon stood in the grey light by the carp pond with his wet cloak dripping and his hand shaking on the hilt of his iron sword.
"The noodle stall."
"They were cold bowls," Gwi-han said. "The broth was cold."
"You weren't drunk."
"I'd had one cup."
"You let me hit you."
"I did not." Gwi-han said it so quickly and so indignantly that Si-hyeon stopped. "I didn't let you do anything. You beat me clean. I wasn't being gallant. I was being a fool, and then you did the ninth move, and I was on my back."
Si-hyeon's chest hurt.
"You knew," he said. "At the gate. When I came at you in the boy's mask."
"I knew from the first second."
The courtyard went very quiet.
A carp turned over in the pond.
"The first move of the Cloud Parting Form," Gwi-han said. "The way your right foot goes a hair too far before the guard drops. I have dreamed of that foot for eight years. I'd have known it blind."
"The face."
"I tore the mask off to see it. To be sure."
"And you smiled."
"I smiled," Gwi-han said, "because I'd found you."
Si-hyeon wanted to scream.
Everything he had lived through for three weeks was reorganizing itself in his head.
Every small kindness was a hook that had been set on purpose.
"You called me Swordsman Ryu that first night," Si-hyeon said. "I never told you my name."
"I asked the stall owner."
