Chapter 16: Black Banner
The Alliance came up the mountain road in blue, and in front of them walked boys who no longer seemed like boys.
Si-hyeon stood on the wall of Black Banner Keep with his iron sword drawn and watched them climb.
There were two hundred in the first wave, all Azure Cloud disciples, and every one of them had red eyes.
They did not shout.
They did not hold formation.
They came up the road in a loose, shambling run, with their jaws working and spit on their chins.
"That's not natural," Bi Soo-ryeon said at his shoulder.
She had a bow in her hands and her sleeves rolled up.
"It's a pill," Si-hyeon said.
He knew it before he knew why.
The skinny boy with the missing tooth was in the third rank.
He had his sword in his hand and a face, and a thread of blood ran from one nostril.
"Gye," Si-hyeon said, and his voice scraped.
On the hill across the valley, a very small figure in immaculate blue sat under a canopy with a teacup.
Gwi-han stood on Si-hyeon's other side.
He had put on his war robes, black on black with a red lining, and for the first time since Si-hyeon had met him, he wore a sword.
It was enormous, as long as Si-hyeon was tall, with a plain black blade and no guard.
Gwi-han was not smiling.
"Those are children," he said softly.
"Some of them are. Don't kill them."
"Si-hyeon."
"Don't kill them. Please. I know I have no right."
Gwi-han looked down at the road, and then at Si-hyeon.
Then he said, "Archers, stand down. Gate crews, use the poles, not the blades. No one kills a boy in a blue robe today."
The wall muttered.
"If anyone does," Gwi-han said, "he'll answer to me."
