Chapter 22: Louisburg Square
The kitchen at Louisburg Square was white now.
The workmen had finished on Tuesday.
There was a new stove where the old one had burned, and a new back stair, and new glass in the window over the garden.
The garden had come up green while nobody was looking.
There were daffodils against the back wall, my mother's, the ones nobody had planted in twenty years.
Malachy stood in the middle of the kitchen and turned in a slow circle.
"Who did your wiring?"
"I have no idea."
He opened the panel by the back door and looked inside for a long, critical moment.
Then he shut it.
"It's fine," he said, sounding disappointed.
Moira came up the new back stair at eleven with a pot of tea wrapped in a towel.
It was the first time she'd come up into the house since March.
She'd waited to be asked, and I'd asked.
She stopped in the doorway and looked at the white kitchen for a long time without saying anything.
Then she put the teapot on the new counter, exactly where the old one used to stand.
