Chapter 19: A Room for Edmund
"She locked you out," I said.
"At six this morning."
Edmund took off his glasses and didn't clean them.
"The police came to the house last night. When they left, I asked her what was in her gold clutch."
"And?"
"She told me to go and ask my daughter."
He looked at the suitcase.
"When I came down for coffee, the maids had packed me. It was on the front steps."
I looked at the brass corners of his suitcase.
Two suitcases and a box, on the same steps.
He saw me thinking it.
"I know," he said quietly. "I stood there for twenty minutes and thought about nothing else."
"Did it hurt?"
"Yes."
"Good."
He nodded.
The bell rang behind him.
Dorrie came in from the deck with two coffees and stopped in the doorway.
She looked at the man at my counter for a long time.
Her hand shook enough to slosh coffee onto her wrist.
"Edmund," she said.
"Dorrie." He tried to smile and didn't manage it. "I'm told you were very good on Saturday."
"You weren't there."
"No. I was in the hotel bar downstairs. The bartender told me."
He looked down.
"I should have been in the room. I'm always in some other room."
