Chapter 22: The Park
Wells sat on the dock boards with his elbows on his knees and looked at the marsh.
The heron flew off the rail.
"Why would they back her?" Dorrie said. "She's in default. They watched her drop them in a hallway."
"Because if she wins the flagship, she's still the Ballantyne name," Wells said. "And the name is what makes a resort sell."
"There's no resort. You're out."
"I'm out. My lots aren't."
He rubbed his face.
"They're betting I'll get tired and sell. Then Ballantyne Tybee goes up anyway, with her name on it."
"Would you?"
He looked at me.
"No."
"Then they're betting wrong."
"They're betting on a man paying taxes on nineteen million dollars of sand."
He stood up.
"Unless the sand stops being mine."
He picked up his phone.
"Who are you calling?"
"The county," he said. "The chairman owes me a favor. He just doesn't know it yet."
Dorrie watched him walk up the dock toward the deck.
Then she turned to me with her glasses crooked and her bathrobe belt in a knot.
"I have shares," she said.
"I know you have shares."
"Twelve percent of Ballantyne Hotels. She gave them to me at twenty-one so I'd look like an heir in the annual report."
