Chapter 22: Section Nine
My father kept his receipts in a tobacco tin under the hot plate.
I found it on Friday, when I went upstairs to look for the one thing in the room I had never opened.
There were seven receipts in it, one for every March.
Each was from Cedar Hill Cemetery, for the upkeep of one small plot, paid in cash.
The first was dated the spring I turned fifteen.
Every March of my childhood, my father had closed the grill for an hour and told me he was going to the dentist.
He never lost a tooth.
Constance drove us herself on Saturday, in her own car, with no driver.
She wore the camel coat and carried a pot of white chrysanthemums on her knees.
Conor followed in the truck and parked at the gate, and he let us go in alone.
The snow from Thursday night lay in a crust on the lawns.
A groundskeeper pointed us down a path between the bare maples.
"Section nine," he said. "The little ones by the wall."
