Chapter 21: The Whole Table
My condo kitchen was built for one woman and a microwave, and on Thanksgiving it held seven people, two dogs and a twenty-pound turkey.
"Move," said Beau's mother, behind me, carrying a pan.
"Moving," I said, and flattened myself against the refrigerator.
"Not you, hon. Him."
Beau, who had been standing in the only free square foot of floor with a mixing bowl and a guilty face, moved.
My sister came in from the dining room with a stack of the good plates.
"Is that all the gravy?" she said.
"That's the first gravy," said Beau's mother. "The second gravy is on the back burner."
"Why are there two gravies?"
"Because there's a turkey and there's a ham, and a person doesn't put ham gravy on turkey."
"Does anybody do that?" my sister asked.
"My husband's mother did," said Beau's mother darkly, "and look what it got her."
My sister opened her mouth, shut it, and went out.
I heard her say in the hall to my brother-in-law, "I think I like her."
I stood at the counter with a wooden spoon in my hand and a smear of flour on my collarbone, and watched my life go by in an apron.
