Chapter 23: Bench Plaque
Tara's POV
At twenty to six on the first Monday in December, the Millbrook dog park was locked and black.
Beau was holding a chain.
"It's not locked," he said.
"It's a gate."
"The big gate is locked. The little gate behind the shed, the one the city truck uses, has a chain that goes around the post and never gets clipped. I noticed in April."
"Of course you did," I said.
"It's a very easy chain."
He lifted it off, and held the gate open with his hip.
The dogs went through ahead of us into the dark with their breath smoking.
Waffles wore a red coat with a hood.
Tank wore nothing and did not care.
It was cold enough that my teeth hurt.
I had on leggings, boots.
Beau's brown canvas coat, which came down to my knees and smelled of bike grease and him.
He carried a thermos in one hand and had the other round my waist.
We went along the gravel path to the picnic shelter at the back.
It was a tin roof on four posts, with two long wooden tables, and past it the fence ran into the dark with the whole city asleep behind it.
The sky behind the pines had begun to go gray.
He tied the dogs' leads to a post, and they wandered off to the fence to read the news.
I sat on the edge of the nearer table with my boots swinging.
The wood was ice under me through the coat.
