Chapter 15: Ask Her Nothing
Declan's POV
She slept with one hand flat on my chest, and I lay awake and let her.
At five I eased out from under it and took the phone into the bathroom, where the tile was still damp from the night before.
I stood there for a minute with my back to the door, thinking about her mouth.
Then I called Boston.
My bald captain answered on the second ring, because he had never slept in his life.
"I want to give Falzone the Calumet toll," I said. "Every dock and every ton, in writing, for his signature and a clean peace."
The line was quiet for a long time.
"For what?"
"For the girl. The war ends, and nobody comes after her again."
"Nine years," he said. "Eleven of our men are in the ground at St. Brendan's for that toll. Their widows get a third of it every Christmas."
"I know the number."
"Then you know you can't sign it away, Declan. Your father held that dock with the captains. You hold it with us."
"I'm the Don."
"You're the Don because we say so." He did not raise his voice, which made it worse. "Do it, and half the table walks. The other half does something stupid."
"I'll call you back."
"You won't," he said. "You'll think about it and you'll find out I'm right."
He hung up.
I stood with the phone in my hand, and the hand shook.
It did that now whenever I thought about her leaving.
Maeve was in the suite's kitchenette in her nurse's cardigan, frying eggs at a stove that was not meant for it.
