Chapter 4: The Cast-Off Wife

Declan's captains met on Thursday night in the back room of a Southie bar with a pool table and no windows.

There were six of them around a card table, and every one looked me over before Declan had finished saying my name.

"Giulia Brandolini," Declan said. "She's sitting in."

"She's Falzone's wife," said the oldest of them, a bald man with a hearing aid.

"His ex-wife," Maeve said from the door, where she had decided to stand with a tray of sandwiches. "It was on the news. He was very proud."

The bald man snorted.

"Cast-off," said a younger captain with a shaved head and a bad tattoo on his neck. "Boss, we're taking in his leftovers now? What does she know that we can use?"

I sat down in the empty chair at the end without waiting to be asked.

"Everything," I said.

"Is that right."

"I kept his second set of books for eight years. Renato can't add a column without a woman checking it, and for a long time that woman was me."

The bald man raised an eyebrow, and a couple of the others laughed into their beer.

I turned to the captain with the neck tattoo.

"Your brother was arrested in March at the Seaport. Four ounces and a gun in the glovebox."

His face stopped moving.

"That arrest was sold," I said. "A lieutenant in District A-1 phoned Chicago the afternoon before. Renato paid him eight thousand dollars for the date and the car."

"That's a lie."

"It's in the second book, on the page marked Boston misc. I wrote the line myself, and I was told it was a charity."
