Chapter 13: The Jury Summons
The council met in the same dining room where I had made Cesare count my money.
Seven men sat at the long table now, and four of them had been there that day.
The old capo sat at the head, because Cesare had given up the head chair to stand beside mine.
Bruna stood at the foot with her hands folded and her pearls on.
Two of Cesare's men flanked her, but nobody had touched her.
The old law said the one who called the council spoke free.
"Speak, Bruna Lombardi," the old capo said.
"Thank you, Zio."
She turned to me and smiled.
"I love this girl," she said. "I want that said first. I paid her gas bill twice."
Nobody laughed.
"But I have a duty to the table," she said. "There are two things you must hear."
She lifted a photograph from a folder.
"This is Ms. Mercer on the steps of the federal courthouse on Lombard Street. She is speaking to a man in a gray suit. She did not tell my brother."
The photo went down the table from hand to hand.
The head from Dundalk, a heavy man with a gold watch, held it longest.
"The second thing," Bruna said softly. "She is thirteen weeks along. My brother and she were apart for a time, I am told. I ask the table to ask whose child this is."
I felt Cesare move beside me.
I put my hand on his good arm, and he stopped.
"I'd like to answer," I said.
"The table has not asked you," said the head from Dundalk.
"Then ask me."
He looked at the old capo, and the old capo shrugged one shoulder.
"Ms. Mercer," the Dundalk man said. "Who is the man in the gray suit?"
"The clerk who stamped my jury summons in March."
I opened my bag, took out the paper and laid it on the table.
