Chapter 23: One Long Table
I opened the door.
Kirill stood there in his undershirt with his hair wet, holding two cups of coffee.
He looked at my face.
Then past me, at the sink.
He set both cups down on the dresser without looking where he put them.
One of them went over.
He didn't notice.
He walked past me into the bathroom and picked up the stick.
He stood holding it in his tattooed hand.
"Simona."
"I know."
"This is..."
"I know what it is."
He turned around.
The pakhan of the Antonov Bratva, the man who'd unloaded a Don's gun onto a bar one round at a time, was crying.
Not much.
He'd have denied it.
He put his hand flat on my stomach over his own shirt, very gently.
"Mine," he said.
"Ours."
"Mine," he said again, and kissed me so hard my back hit the doorframe.
Then he pulled back and looked at me with a terrible new seriousness.
"You're not going to the piers alone anymore."
"I'm going to the piers on Monday at seven, like always."
"With four men."
"With Benno."
"Benno is sixty-two."
