Chapter 25: The Living Son
It's sixty feet from the doors to the altar rail in our chapel.
The church was longer.
He didn't look at his feet.
He looked at his father's casket the whole way, the way the embalmer had drilled him.
The whispering started in the back pews and ran ahead of us.
A woman cried out.
A man stood up so fast his kneeler banged.
Halfway up, an old man on the aisle grabbed Marcello's sleeve.
"Madonna," he said. "It's the boy."
Marcello stopped and put his wrapped hand over the old man's for one second.
Then he kept walking.
At the front, Tiziana had her gloved hand pressed flat on her pearls.
Fabrizio was on his feet.
His right hand had gone into his jacket pocket, ring and all.
Marcello reached the casket.
He laid his hand on the white pall over his father's chest.
Then he turned around and faced the church.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your Mass, Father," he said to the priest. "I was told I wasn't coming."
