Chapter 26: The Second Casket
"Finish the Mass, Father," Marcello said. "My father paid for all of it."
The priest finished it.
He did it fast, with Fabrizio on his knees in the aisle between two of the capo's sons.
His mother stood alone in the front pew with the note in her hand.
Nobody sat with her.
At the end, Marcello took the front right corner of his father's casket himself.
The capo's sons took the others with four of the old men.
I walked in front of them down the steps, past the two long lines of men who'd kissed Fabrizio's hand at eight.
None of them could look at me.
The cemetery was cold and bright.
The Don's grave was open beside his first wife's, under an old oak.
Folding chairs stood in rows for the family, and a green cloth covered the dirt.
Beside the grave, on a second stand, stood a second mahogany casket.
Brass handles.
Lid open.
Empty white satin inside.
The driver had brought it in the van that morning.
Marcello had ridden to his father's Mass sitting beside it.
