Chapter 30: Her Answer
Marcello read the letter twice over my shoulder.
"You're not going to answer it," he said.
"I'm going to answer it."
"Vittoria."
"She wrote to me because she couldn't look at me," I said. "I'm not doing her that favor."
On Tuesday, I drove downtown in my black work dress and low heels.
The federal detention center is a tall concrete building across from the courthouse, with windows.
I'd buried two men who'd done time there.
I'd never been inside.
They took my phone and my keys and my pen.
They walked me through two doors that buzzed and a room with a metal detector.
The visiting room was long, with plastic chairs bolted to the floor.
She was already sitting at a table by the wall.
I almost didn't know her.
No pearls.
No cream suit.
No red lipstick.
Her black bob had grown out a quarter inch, and there was gray at the roots.
She was wearing tan prison clothes that didn't fit her shoulders, and she sat with her back straight anyway.
