Chapter 14: The Boathouse
The lake house sat at the end of a gravel road outside Skaneateles, with a dock, a boathouse, and six of Dominic's men on the grounds.
Angelo slept in the back bedroom with the door open and a guard on the landing.
I stood in the kitchen at two in the morning with a glass of water I had forgotten to drink.
Dominic stood at the window with his back to me.
"I was twenty-six," he said.
"My father sent me to Albany to collect from the man who kept our books."
"He opened the door with a baby on his hip and a wife behind him in a bathrobe."
"I told him to go back to bed."
I waited.
"Two months later he sold our routes to Aldo, and eleven of my father's men went to prison for it."
"The table nearly took my place in the line."
"My father never said a word to me about it, and it took him a year to buy that place back."
"That's what I was afraid of tonight."
"Not the guns."
"That if I opened my mouth, I'd be soft again, and a child would pay for it."
I put the glass down.
"You didn't open your mouth," I said.
