Chapter 22: The Chair
The back room of the steakhouse on Erie Boulevard looked exactly the same as it had five years ago.
The same long table sat under the same low brass lamp.
Eleven old men sat around it, and the twelfth chair, Aldo's, stood pushed back against the wall.
The bald man with the cane sat at the head and did not touch the bread.
I stood beside Dominic's chair, not in it.
"Dominic Ferraro," the bald man said.
"You asked the table for a hearing."
Dominic rose to his full height, and the room fell quiet.
"The seat was my father's," he said.
"I held it, and I have not once used it."
"You have all been taking orders from the wrong chair."
Nobody gasped.
They had all been in a warehouse or a funeral home or somebody's ear by now.
"I'm not telling you something you don't know," Dominic said.
"I'm telling you that I won't sit in a chair that I don't use."
"Give it to the one who does."
One of the old men at the far end shifted, a narrow man with a gold watch.
