Chapter 12: His Own Voice

"We take it to the Commission," Raf said. "Today."

He had put his shirt back on and was standing at the window with his arms folded.

I sat at the table with the tape recorder in front of me and a cold cup of coffee I had not touched.

"And what do they hear?" I asked.

"A voice."

"A dead man's voice, on a tape, in a Montano house, accusing a living Don." I turned the cup in a slow circle. "How long before the old man with the cane says it was cut together?"

Raf did not answer.

"They will not say it to my face," I said. "They will say it to each other, in the car, afterward. They have a war to hold and five seats to keep. They will not want to hear that Sandro started it, so they will find a reason."

"The recording is genuine."

"I know. They won't need it to be false. They only need it to be doubted."

Teresa put down her spoon.

"She is right," she said. "That is how men are."

Raf looked at me for a long time.

"What do you need?"

"His own voice."

The kitchen went quiet.

"Sandro will say it himself," I said. "Not on a tape from three years ago. In his own mouth, today, to a wife he believes will go along."

"Elena."

"He wants the child. He wants me home. He thinks I am frightened and grieving and that I will do what a Don's wife does." I put my hand on the machine. "He has never once heard me argue with him. He does not know how to be afraid of me."

Raf came to the table.

He braced both hands on it.

"No."

"I haven't said what."

"You are going to tell me you will go back to the penthouse."

"Yes."

"No."

"I'll wear a wire," I said. "Dario's contact in Chicago can fit it. Sandro will talk, Raf. He talks to me. He used to tell me about his day, and I would nod. I know the questions that make him boast."
