Chapter 18: The Pier

Gia fell against the door frame and slid down it.

Raf fired past me, three times, fast.

Sandro dropped back down the iron stairs and the bullets rang off the rail where his head had been.

"Stay with her," Raf said.

He was gone before I could answer.

I crawled across the floor to Gia.

The front of her green silk coat was already black.

"No," I said. "No, no. Teresa, a cloth."

Teresa tore off her own apron and pressed it hard against the wound.

Gia looked at me.

Her lipstick was still perfect.

"Don't," she said. "It's high up. I know what it is."

"Be quiet. They're coming with an ambulance."

"You set me a plate," Gia said.

I stared at her.

"Every Sunday. For three years. I wanted you to throw it. I used to go home and cry because you never did."

"Gia."

"I slept in your bed to see if you would hit me." Her laugh turned into a cough. "You looked at me like I was a guest."

I had no answer for that.

Her hand found my sleeve.

"Listen. Where will he go? He's not stupid."

"The lake. A boat."

"Not first." She dragged in a breath. "Your father's house, in Cicero. He kept the keys when you moved. There's a study. A room behind the study. He thinks nobody knows."

"Cicero."

"He keeps the real ledger there. The one with the names, and the money, and the cousin. If you take that..." Her eyes slid to the ceiling. "If you take that, he has nothing to run to."

"Gia, stay with me."

"I held the helmet," she said, quietly, to nobody. "He told me it was for love."
