Chapter 4: Her Own Story

"What did you do at my wedding party?" I asked.

Raf did not answer.

Teresa picked up the dishes and carried them out of the kitchen, and Dario found something to do in the hall.

We were alone with the silent television.

"I was there," Raf said at last.

"Everyone says that about everything."

"I stood outside your reception for an hour. I left before the cake." His voice was level. "I will tell you the rest, Mrs. Pagano, when it will not sound like an excuse."

"That is not an answer."

"No."

He stood, took his coat off the chair, and walked to the window.

I had spent three years learning when a man was done speaking.

I let it go.

For now.

The television was still showing my husband's wet eyes.

Under the picture, the banner read, MOB BOSS'S WIFE ABDUCTED.

I pictured every family in the country watching that banner.

I pictured them nodding.

Montano took her.

Of course he did.

By tomorrow, Sandro would have men on three highways and a war nobody could stop.

"Does Sandro want the families to believe that?" I asked.

"He wants them to believe it for one week."

"Why a week?"

"Because in a week the divorce is final, the clause is law, and the story changes to a rescue."

I looked at the tiny gray house on the bluff, the wall, the gate.

All of it looked like a place where someone could vanish quietly.

"I am not going to vanish," I said.

Raf turned.

"I know a thing or two about a man with a story," I said. "He tells it first, loudly, and everyone else fights to catch up. So I tell mine louder. Where is the phone Dario used to photograph the papers?"
