Chapter 22: The Tree
I stood up.
"You'll never get near her," I said.
"I already did," he said, and ate the olive.
At the door the heavy capo held my phone out to me.
He still didn't meet my eyes.
I walked out past him, through the closed front of the restaurant, and onto Decatur Street.
I made it as far as the florist's van.
The agent pulled me in by the wrist, and I sat down on a crate of roses and shook.
"Coco," I said.
"Two cars are at the school already," she said. "She's in her classroom. She's fine. She's coloring."
"He threatened her. On tape. You heard him."
"I heard him threaten a coat." The agent's jaw was tight. "A good lawyer calls it a grieving old man talking about Christmas. It's a threat, Marin. It's not a murder. I want him for your garage."
"I want him to make his move. In public. Where nobody can say he didn't."
Ezio's car pulled up behind the van.
He looked at my face, and then he looked at the restaurant, and for one second I saw the Don the city was afraid of.
"Ezio," I said. "No."
