Chapter 23: The Marshal's Price
Fia didn't unlock the door.
She looked back at me through the glass with the rolling pin still raised.
Ezio stepped in front of both of us.
"Don't," I said. "Don't open it yet."
The marshal pressed his palm flat on the glass.
"Marin, it's freezing. Let me in."
"You can talk from there."
"Somebody sat outside my motel for two nights. Gaspare stopped paying me the day your Don went to the FBI. I'm suspended. I've got nobody."
"So you came to me."
"I came to the only people he's scared of."
I took the agent's card out of my jeans pocket and called her.
She picked up on the second ring, wide awake.
"He's here," I said. "At the bakery. He wants a deal."
"Don't let him in. I'm twenty minutes out."
So the marshal stood on the step in the cold for twenty minutes.
Fia turned the shop lights on so the whole of Magazine Street could see him there.
When the agent pulled up, she stopped on the step and looked at him.
"You can come in," she said. "You talk first. Deal after."
He sat at the long table in the back room, under the tin ceiling, in Fia's father's corner chair.
