Benedetta drove.
She refused to answer a single question all the way down the Dan Ryan.
"Is he okay?"
"He's fine."
"Is something wrong?"
"Everything's wrong. You've got toothpaste on your collar."
I didn't. I checked anyway.
The twins slept in the back, my son with his fists up, my daughter with one eye open.
She parked illegally on Clark Street, put the hazards on, and lifted the double stroller out of the trunk.
"Go," she said. "We're coming. Go first."
The building was the same.
Gray, and loud, and full of people holding folders.
I hadn't been inside it since a Thursday in August, two summers ago.
I'd worn a yellow sundress then, and he'd worn his good suit, and Benedetta had cried through the whole thing and pretended it was allergies.
