Chapter 17: Epiphany
The Strip District fish market opened its loading dock at dawn on Epiphany, and by eight there were four hundred people in the cold.
Ice hung from the awnings. Cod lay in tubs of crushed ice, and a boy with an accordion played at the corner of the dock.
The priest stood on the loading platform in a white cope, with a bucket of blessed water and a sprig of basil.
Behind him, on four folding chairs, sat the Pellegrino family.
The don sat at the center in a black coat, with his cane across his knees.
His gold signet ring shone on the hand that rested on top.
Assunta sat at his right with her thermos on her lap. Dominic stood behind the chairs with his hands clasped.
Paola was not there. A rail and a river had done that much.
Tomo and I stood at the back, by a stack of crates, with the head deckhand and two of his men in their good jackets.
"Hat down," the head deckhand said to me. "You're easy to see."
