Chapter 14: Burn Ward

Antonia tore the card in half.

Then in half again.

She dropped the pieces into the lilies and closed the lid on them.

"Again," she said. "He writes 'again' to a woman in a hospital bed."

"He wants me to know it was him."

"Everybody knows it was him." She stood up and tucked the box under her arm. "I'm going to throw these in the river. Then I'm going to make some calls."

"Antonia."

"Not those calls." She looked at me over her glasses. "Yet."

She pushed the curtain aside and went out with the box, her nightgown hem showing under her coat.

In the next bay, Nick said, "Ow. That's the arm, you know that's the arm."

I got up.

My legs were shaky, and my sweatshirt smelled like the inside of a chimney.

I pulled back his curtain.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed with his left arm wrapped from wrist to elbow in white gauze.

His T-shirt had a hole burned in the shoulder. There was soot in his beard and in the lines by his eyes.

The doctor was taping the last of the gauze.

"Second degree," she said, without looking up. "You'll keep the arm. You may not keep the hair on it."

"I'll live without the hair."

"Change it twice a day. If it goes green, come back."

She looked at me, then at him, then left us alone.

Nick looked down at his arm.

"It's ugly," he said. "Don't look at it."
