Chapter 17: The Gate

"Don't," Antonia said.

I was already putting my shoes on.

"Lia. She'll lie to you. She's out there in the rain because rain looks good on a camera."

"I know."

"Then why go?"

"Because she's my sister," I said. "And because I want to hear what she lies about."

Nick took the big black umbrella out of the stand by the back door.

He didn't say anything.

He just walked beside me down the long driveway with it held over both of us, and his other hand in his coat.

The gate was iron, painted black, taller than a man.

The guards stepped back into their little booth when they saw me coming.

Marisa stood on the other side of the bars.

Up close she looked worse than on the screen.

Her mascara had run. Her coat was thin, a camel one I'd never seen before. A man's coat, cut for a woman.

Her shoes were ruined.

"Lia," she said.

Her teeth were chattering.

"Lia, please. Can I come in? Just for a minute. Just to get warm."

"No."

She flinched.

"I'm your sister."

"I know who you are. That's why you're standing on that side."

She held the bars with both hands.

"He threw me out," she said. "Paolo. After the vote."

"He said I made him look stupid in front of his father. He said a girl who can't even fake a baby properly is no use to anybody."

She laughed, high and awful.
