Chapter 27: Sunday at Mama's
Nonna came to Bridgeport on Sunday in the back of a cousin's Buick, with a foil pan on her knees.
I watched from the front window as the cousin helped her out at the curb.
She looked up at Mama's narrow brick house for a long moment.
Then she came up the stoop one step at a time, refusing his arm.
"You need a rail on the other side," she said when I opened the door. "You're an architect. Build a rail."
"Hello, Nonna."
"Hello. Take this. It's hot." She pushed the braciole into my hands. "Not dry."
The house was full by one.
I'd never seen it full like this.
Mama's house was built for two people and a sewing machine.
Today Marisa's brothers had carried the folding table up from the basement again and put it end to end with Mama's kitchen table, all the way through the arch into the parlor.
Mama's Singer had been moved to the windowsill to make room.
Marisa's mother was at Mama's stove, as she was every Sunday now.
The old lady next door had come through the backyard gate with a pan of eggplant and a bottle of anisette, and was arguing with Marisa's mother about salt.
Nathaniel was setting the table with Mama's good plates, the ones with the gold rim, and getting it wrong.
