Chapter 12: Friday

The county courthouse has a ramp on the side street where the transfer vans come in.

At twenty past eight on Friday, Tancredi stopped the Escalade across it.

Remo put the hazards on.

I sat in the back seat with my hands in my lap and my brother's favourite sweater in a bag beside me.

"They'll tow you," I said.

"Yes."

"The captains are going to see you."

"That's the idea."

He got out and stood in the road, in front of the grille, in his black suit.

Two reporters were on the courthouse steps with a camera, there for a different case.

They turned their heads.

A line of black cars was pulling up along the curb on the main street, and the captains were getting out of them in good coats, one by one, with their wives.

Ignazio came last, with Orsola.

He saw the Escalade, and he saw who was standing in front of it.

The van came down the side street a minute later.

It slowed.

The driver leaned on his horn.

Tancredi did not move.

I got out of the car.

I had not asked, and he had not told me to stay, and I walked up the road and stood at his side.

My husband took my hand.

He did it in front of the reporters and the van driver and eighteen men who had never seen him do it, and he held it up between us.

"My wife's brother is in that van," Tancredi said, loud, in the clear cold air. "His name is Emilio Costa. He is a member of my family."

The camera had swung round.
